Shiatsu is a holistic massage therapy technique developed in the 20th century in Japan and based on ancient Chinese acupuncture and traditional Japanese massage.
Shiatsu is the art of treatment by touch which results in bodily and mental balance and improves health and quality of life. The treatment is based on palm, finger and arm and leg pressure on meridians (energy flow lines) and energy points in the body which are the same points used in Chinese acupuncture. The treatment is based on the principle that illness is caused by an imbalance in the energy flows in the body which results in blockages in the flow of energy or excess energy. This causes various symptoms and illnesses. Shiatsu is a system for correcting these imbalances and restoring the correct flow of energy in the body. An important aspect of Shiatsu is diagnosis by palpitation of the naval area (Hara) or of the back.

Raya works in her private clinic in Jerusalem.

Shiatsu, although probably of ancient origin, was developed in its present form in the 20th century by Tokujiro Namikoshi in Japan. He was an outstanding practitioner of traditional Japanese massage and subsequently developed his system and opened a school in which his techniques were taught and developed. He sought to place Shiatsu techniques within a Western framework and his school received an official license in Japan.
He passed these techniques on to a series of talented pupils who taught and further developed his techniques in different directions. Raya is a follower of the school founded by Shizuto Masunaga. Masunaga was a professor of psychology at Tokyo University and was also a practioner zen Buddhism. He began to blend Shiatsu with Western physiology in a style known as "Zen Shiatsu".
